Hockey Scores
WHAT HAVE WE HERE?
I always enjoy it when things don't go as planned. That being said, I usually enjoy things that end up on the lighter side of things, as opposed to the things that result in death or dismemberment. This entry will discuss something like that.
So. Remember when the NHL started their all-star vote in category, and fans nearly voted in utility defenseman Rory Fitzpatrick? Eleven or twelve years ago before this concept existed, remember when Darren Puppa was injured and finished a not too distant second place in all-star balloting? It seems that when you give the fans a voice, they're going to run it into the ground as hard and as often as humanly possible.
So, when CBC lost the rights to the Hockey Night in Canada theme song, they decided to let the fans come up with something new. Design the new Hockey Night theme, that's the ticket. They're giving away a cash prize to the winner, and the theme song will be used in this year's HNIC broadcasts.
So what do you think the people are doing?
If you guessed this would be the highest vote getter come October, you might be right. I'm so not kidding. This, entitled "Hockey Scores" is the frontrunner to win the new Hockey Night in Canada theme song contest, as voted by the CBC viewing area.
According to the contest rules, the composer will "[...]receive half the royalties accrued by theme peformance." I hope for certain they don't mean live performance, 'cause I'd pay cold cash to see a couple bassoons and oboes try that out.
I can't imagine CBC would let this on the air, so it wouldn't surprise me too awful much if a bunch of "votes" were "cast" near the end of the "contest". If you give the torch to a bunch of pissed off viewers, look what can happen.
I can only see Ron MacLean's face after that, or better yet, Don Cherry's.
God, we can only hope.
Season can't start soon enough. Take care.
